These notes only apply if making the pineapples a different color from the background (as with the red/yellow square pictured).
Simply Soft yarn, sold as a worsted weight, is actually sport weight, so it makes a 9” square. Because of my modification to alternate colors, I had to adjust Rnds 12 and 13, and added Rnds 14-15 to get to 9”.
I don’t recommend working the pineapples in a separate color as I did (with the red and yellow square). The finished look is cool, but it causes the square to not allow the pineapples to spread out to really show their pattern. The reason: Carrying the yellow across under the red makes the red area double-thick so it alters the shape of the yellow pineapples. You can’t even it out by carrying red across the under the yellow because the pineapple chs can’t hide the red strand (you could however, do it by having the colors reversed). Even if you have separate balls for each piece: When you crochet around, picking up one color, dropping the other, and get back to the beginning, the dropped color is across on the other side, which means you have to pull the yarn strand across to pick it up, then crochet over it again to go back to pick up the next color, which also has to be pulled back across in order to pick it up again. Still, it’s kind of a neat look and if you want to give it a go, you need to be well versed in changing colors. It is not for the beginner!
