Notes

The star stitches of the 1800’s were crocheted in wool yarns, even the lacy stars, so I suspect they originated in a northern climate. The earliest star stitch pattern I found is in Norwegian.

Meanwhile, love knots were always crocheted with very fine cotton or silk thread--from a southern climate perhaps? (I suspect it was inspired by macramé.)

It took some figuring for me to get love knots and star stitches to settle in comfortably with each other in a stable, versatile stitch pattern. This one is a multiple of 4 + 3, and it’s a surprise bonus that a symmetrical number of row repeats results in a square block. In fact I’d like to see what it looks like if I add a simple border.

I’ve also added photos of the earliest swatches I tried in May 2014.
