There’s something about this stitch pattern in this yarn that is like a summit or pinnacle, with a skeletal old patrician empire luxe whiff.

This lace is the subject of newsletter issue #60, “Lacy Star Stitch Pretties.”
.
The yarn is a no-label lace weight superfine (low micron) merino wool, single ply. I love it -- high twist, so it has a soft spring to it, and a more polished surface than the Malabrigo Lace, which a bit more fleecy and less springy.

I’m more than halfway done now. I’m doing a few rows when I have a chance. So busy right now! When will it end! But this will be a stole and crocheting it is my precious relaxing time.
.
I think I’m ready to start this project for real: a simple sheer generous-sized rectangle that can be worn like a billowy scarf, or swathed like a wrap. I don’t think I need to do fancy things like offset the rows, or intersperse other stitch textures, or even try a different yarn. (Although I will scan the stash once as a last check.)
.
I’m just trying to envision an edging. I’d rather not leave that completely until the end.
