Got input on the Ravelry techniques forum, and it looks like the welt and lower part of the sleeves are knitted, but the blouse-part is crochet. UK trebles alternated with clusters. Interesting :) I think I’ll enjoy creating this jumper!
Melanostalgia kindly gave me an outline of the pattern as she has it in her collection. It still requires a bit of calculation and swatching, and I rather think I’ll have to create a paper pattern and do a mock up for the crochet part, to make sure I get it right.
The original was made in a knitting and crochet cotton, probably the equivalent of a modern 4 ply/ sock yarn.
The torso has quite a lot of positive ease. Perhaps as much as 4 inches. The puff sleeves are very wide too. I might slim the sleeves a little, and make the crochet part longer by adding a colour block.
The knit part of the sleeves has a ribbed cuff, the rest looks like stockinette. Ribbed waistband.
20.05.2019 - tension
Tension of ribbing:
13 rows and 8 sts to 3 cm
Tension trebles:
8 trebles is 6.5 cm high
7 trebles is 3 cm wide.
20.06.2019 - measurements
Bust: 40 - 42 inches
shoulders: 13 inches
Top of welt to armscye: 8 inches (approx)
Welt: 4 inches
Armscye height: 7.5 inches
Armscye - front neck: 6 inches
Crocheted as written at the required tension, the back/front comes out at 16 1/4 inch before blocking.
23.06.2019 - back and yarn
I started on the back yesterday, and so far the yarn seems to work really well. It’s a Danish yarn that’s new to me. Filcolana arwetta classic, a superwash merino wool with 20% nylon. It feels rougher than what I’m used to from a merino wool, but it’s not splitty, very fine and crochets up beautifully. Looks like it will keep its shape very well.
I decided to do the back as written, but I suspect it will turn out a little snug. I’ll finish it and block it to see if it will grow.
The yarn presses beautifully! I pinned the back to measurements, aiming for 39.5 inch width, 9 inches from bottom to armscye and 7.5 inch armscye - shoulder, and pressed it very lightly using a moist kitchen towel and a steam iron, and it came out perfect
I decided not to make a button closing at the neck. I’ll instead see if I can’t make do without it. If the neck turns out too snug so I can’t pull it over my head, I’ll just unravel the last 8 rows and redo them, with a slit.
26.06.2019 - vertical chains
I’ve done a little testing, and decided to skip them. They didn’t really work all that well. The fabric looked a lot better without them. They might have worked better if I had added a chain between the individual clusters and also between the solid treble sections and the openwork sections, but then the jumper would have ended up very wide.
07.07.2019 - fit
I pressed the front and back, and found I had to make changes to both. I’ve unraveled the back down to the blue stripe, divided it in the middle and crocheted the left and right side separately, adding a 4 treble underlap for a slit.
I decided to unravel the front down to the beginning of the armscye as I needed to make changes to the armscye shaping and the neck as well. Thankfully crocheting is rather quick compared to knitting, so this isn’t such a big setback.
16.07.2019
Finished the back and front again, plus one of the sleeves. Pressed all pieces, pinned them together and tried it on. It fits very well
13.07.2019 - sleeves
Decided to make the crochet part of the sleeves longer and a little slimmer than the original, so decided to do 4 cluster sections instead of 6
Have added one striped section in height, which should make the bishop sleeve come down to beneath the elbow.
The under arm seam of the crochet sleeve should measure approximately 10 inches after pressing.
Cuffs:
80 sts, reducing to 62 at the wrists.
Tension for cuffs:
2.75 mm needle: 10.6 rows per inch.
Pick up 102 sts, then decrease as follows:K2, (k2tog, k2) 4 times, (k2tog, k3) 13 times, (k2tog, k2) 4 times, k2tog, k1
Make the first decrease after 5 rows, and space the rest 10 rows apart.
21.07.2019
I’m currently at 7 inches of the 1st sleeve cuff, and man, this is a lot of ribbing!
17.07.2019 - welt
Update 23.03.2020:
The welt came out too tight.
Picked up sts from the crochet chain and reknitted the welts without decreases.
First 2 inches on 2.75 mm needles, and the last 2 on 3.25 mm needles.
Height: 4 inches
Decided to use this bind off with 2 mm needles. It makes for a nice, firm edge with good recovery. I hope it’ll keep well with use later on, with no upward edge curling.
