01.11.2022 - double moss stitch pattern
1st Row: K 2 p 2 to end.
Next Row: K 2 p 2 to end.
Next Row: P 2 k 2 to end.
Next Row: P 2 k 2 to end.
4 sts repeat
The original has approximately 7.75 sts per inch in width, provided that the jumper has zero ease
Vintage 3-ply wool on 3.25 mm needles.
Will use Drops Alpaca, I think it will suit perfectly, and give a lovely drape to the garment
13.11.2022 - tension and measurements
Double moss stitch:
Tension before washing and pressing on 3.25 mm needles:
5.8 sts per inch
11 rows per inch
5.7 sts per inch on actual garment
Garter stitch:
4.8 sts per inch
13.11.2022 - Front - first attempt
I’m keeping the below notes for reference, but this attempt did not work. It came out too large. The fabric stretches a lot, probably because of the combination of stitch pattern and yarn
Cast on 122 sts, start the ribbing on 2nd stitch, reserving the 1st and last for the seam. Welt 4,5 inches. No increases before starting the main fabric.
Hem to armscye - 13.5 inches
Armscye to shoulder - 7 inches
Shoulder to shoulder - 16 inches
Armscye to beg. of garter stitch yoke - 5
beg. gs yoke to neck shaping - 1.5
Studying the picture, it’s clear that the jumper has very wide shoulders. The armscyes are balancing at the very tip of the shoulders. Knitting as written with my tension will leave this area appriximately 16 - 16,5 inches. It’s a little difficult to get an accurate measurement as the fabric is very stretchy. I normally aim for 14 inches but in this case I think I’ll try 16 and see how it looks.
I’m not sure about the front. I suspect it came out a little wide at 21.5 inches, but I’ll keep the stitch count for the back, and if the jumper comes out too loose I’ll take it in at the sides.
Not sure about the neck either. I suspect the neck scoop needs to be deeper. Will decide after the back is done, and I can try it on.
It came out much too wide, so I need a little think about how to proceed. I might be better off unraveling back to the ribbing, reduce the stitch count and reknit.
The neck shaping does need to be lowered, by about an inch, and the armscye needs to start 1 inch lower.
28.04.2023 - back
Keep the welt at 122 stitches, but unravel down to the welt and reduce the stitch count to 100 sts - should make for 18 inch back. And if it’s still too wide I’ll take it in at the sides.
I suspect a moth as been to the knitting as I found a hole in it. As it was in the part I unraveled it wasn’t a disaster, but still not nice at all.
Welt to armscye: 8.25 inches
Alpaca is rather tricky to work with. The width came out at 17,5 inches, not 18 as I thought it would. It really is very hard to measure accurately. I’m still not 100% sure of the width
Armscye shaping:
Cast off 6 sts beginning of next two rows,
and knit 2 sts together at beginning of next 8 rows (80 sts left). Knit straight for 4.5 inches. I’m aiming for armscye height of 6.5 inches, 1 inch lower than usual, because of the stretchy nature of the fabric.
Reduce stitch count by 12 sts evenly distributed before starting the garter stitch.
Shoulder shaping:
6-6-5-5
Neck 25 sts
20.08.2024 - sleeves
Will shorten the cuffs to standard size, and have the sleeves wide all the way down to the wrists
The pattern must have a typo in the instructions for the upper sleeves. I tried following the instructions but the sleeve head came out much too tall, and the blue section would have ended up too narrow. Here’s my version:
Cast on 100 sts for upper sleeves on 4 mm needles, change to 3.25 mm and work in double moss stitch for 8 rows.
At the beginning of the next and every 4th row cast on 2 sts. Start grey section after 5 inches, (26 extra stitches), remembering to decrease every 7 stitches - 18 decreases total. After 4 inches of garter stitch switch back to blue, knit the first row while increasing back to 126 stitches - 18 increases, start double moss stitch on 2nd row.
Cuffs
Pick up 1 stitch in every knot on 2.75 mm needles, next row reduce to 60 sts while doing a k2 p2 rib pattern
Rib for 4 inches and bind off using a 3.5 mm needle
29.09.2024 - front - second attempt
Reduce to 100 sts after welt as for back. Increase at both sides at 1 inch intervals 6 times. Should bring width to 36/37 inches at bust
Armscye:
Cast off 8 sts at beginning of first 2 rows, then 2 sts at beginning of the following two rows. Knit 2 sts together at beginning of next 12 rows - leaves 80 sts.
Knit as for back until it’s time to change to grey garter stitch. Reduce sts same as for back, then continue on one half of sts. 34 sts each half. Knit 6 ridges then cast off 10 at beg. Of neck edge. Reduce 1 sts at neck edge twice, then knit until the garter knit measures 2 inches
This made for a comfortable neck line.
I’ve tried it on for size and shape after fastening the front and back together with stitch markers, and it looks like it will fit very well.
18.10.2024 - Tie
Well, this is annoying. I believe we have another typo here. The pattern calls for increases beginning and end of every row to create the point at the bottom. This creates a gentle curve, not a deep point, so will attempt increases every second row instead. 38 sts ends up too wide with my tension, so will go for 30 at widest point, narrowing to 16. A total of 7 decrease rows. The decrease rows need to be evenly spaced over a distance of approximately 14 inches, so will space them every 20 rows.
With grey wool and 3.25 mm needles cast on 2 sts. Now at the beginning and end of every second row make 1 stitch until there are 30 stitches, still working in double moss. Continue without increasing for 11 rows.
At the beginning and end of next and every 20th row k 2 tog. until there are 16 sts. on needle. Continue without decreasing for 14 inches.
Now at beginning and end of next and every 20th row cast on 1 st. until there are 38 sts., then at beginning and end of every other row k 2 tog. until 2 sts. remain.
Cast off.
The fabric has a bias slant due to the stitch pattern that shows really well in the tie due to the shape. Will see if blocking helps
21.10.2024 - standing collar
I’m considering adding a standing collar to the jumper, with tabs for the scarf. I think it will work well, and allow me to wear it with or without the scarf/tie
I added the collar and it looks good
