Last time this came out too big and I had to frog it when nearly finished because I’m an idiot which was a bit painful and took the whole of The Imitation Game to do. So I will learn from my mistakes:
a) I am swatching properly this time, and I mean it. (last time I don’t think I ‘got’ the stitch pattern until after I’d swatched…). Will try 3.75mm hook not 4mm first. DONE: I think it’s spot on! Though scrap of yarn ran out before I’d done all 12 rows.
b) I think the M size is better for me than L to have less ease. My measurements are between the two but closer to M. Also I ran out of yarn last time so fewer stitches per row can only be a good thing.
c) I’m working from book pattern not magazine reprint which has more details and diagrams to help me understand what I’m doing.
d) I’m going to keep track of row stitch counts better using aforementioned details.

28 Mar: first ball of yarn finished on row 13 of yoke.

26 Apr: yoke finished. Second ball of yarn finished on round 1 of body.

29 Dec: Third ball finished on round 12 of body.

3 Feb 2018 Picked up after a long hiatus and looks like fourth ball ran out on row 25 of body.

12 Feb: Forgot to say I bought adorable buttons for this from the Ghibli Museum near Tokyo so now I have to finish it. Am nearly finished body at last. Think I’ll do collar edging next, then split bulk of last ball of yarn to see how long I can get the sleeves, then possibly use contasting colour for the body edging or possibly leave it off.

23 Aug: put this down for months again because I couldn’t figure out the collar edging. Finally picked it up again today and worked it out! Left last sc edge and button band to do after blocking. Next up: sleeves. At least now I have a yarn winder to help with splitting the last ball - up to 18g per sleeve.

25 Aug: totally baffled by sleeve instructions: meant to place three markers but can’t work out how to do this. Also getting 62 not 56 st in round. Decided to work dc underarm, cdsp round the rest, and decrease underarm on the same rounds as pattern plus extra at start to get back to pattern.

29 Aug: 18g on right sleeve got me 14 rounds. This looks fine. After second sleeve I definitely need to do bottom lace edging as jumper is too short, will have to use contrast colour so think I may use same for sc collar edge and add a sc sleeve edge rather than lace edging.

7 Sep: bottom edging done in contrast colour except last sc round, now blocking. Has come out slightly too wide but dimensions otherwise OK. Still planning to do contrast sc edging round collar and sleeves if I have enough yarn, might do main colour for last sc round of bottom but fear it’ll look naff.

10 Sep: I’ve finished it :D :D :D Ended up using contrast colour for sc edging of everything (collar, cuffs, bottom of jumper) and buttonholes. Have very little of either yarn left; if I had more contrast colour I think doing whole collar edging in it would look better. Sewed on the special Totoro buttons from the Ghibli Museum - the bottom two are a bit tucked away so might remove them and sew the bottom shut if I come up with another project to use them in.
