Notes

Mom mentioned only a couple weeks before her birthday she’d like a new cardigan (too little time for me to act then), so since I accidently bought double what I’d need to make this cardigan for myself, I’m going to make one of each of us. I originally considered flip-flopping the colors for one of us, but not sure I’ll like the look of the darker color up top.
When Mom last visited, I snuck into her room and measured a hoodie of hers so I could get a rough idea on what size to make for her.

10/23/17 - Now that I finally figured out how to pick up the stitches after the i-cord cast-on, I was able to get moving (the pattern could be clearer in that respect, as well as cleaning up the duplicate language that added additional confusion). I also did the i-cord in the darker color, not realizing until afterwards that the MC wasn’t assigned to the darker color but to the lighter color. So Mom’s will have a dark i-cord edging, and mine will have the lighter color i-cord.
However, this is going slower than anticipated due to floating the unused color across multiple rows. I understand the reason why, but still has slowed me down drastically. Good thing I started in October! :)

12/11/17 - due to other projects, family stuff, holiday stuff, I am really far behind since this isn’t something I can easily bring in the car or out-and-about. Finished the flower chart and am getting close to splitting for the sleeves, etc. I will admit I am starting to panic a bit.

12/12/17 - did 36 rows of peerie chart 2 before neck shaping. Now trying to make sense of the i-cord bind off in the shaping instructions.
Reached 8.5” on RS row #33 (second time). Bound off right front on row 24 (third time).

12/15/17 - Finished back, hoping to get thru left front today.

12/17/17 - Finished the front left. Since there’s no way to finish the sleeves and still get it sent to Mom in time, I will just keep working on it; hoping to have this to her around new years.

1/13/18 - The sleeves were painful with knitting it flat and needing to keep track of the starting point each time there was an increase. Didn’t get any knitting done the week prior to Christmas, and got almost none done the week of Christmas with the kids home, so didn’t get a good start on the sleeves until after New Years and finished them today. Will wash and block tomorrow, and if it dries in enough time, will stitch it together.
I also found an error in the chart in row19, column 13 of the flower chart. It should be a green block instead of tan. Of course I found this while doing the sleeves and couldn’t figure out a good way to correct it on the body; due to the thickness of the fabric, and sewn-over stitch was standing out and I couldn’t get it to lie nicely, so I left it without correcting it on the body. Hoping no one notices besides me.

1/18/18 - finally complete. Washed, blocked, sewn together, ends woven, i-cord binding finished. I almost had a panic attack when I was trying to block the sweater to the dimensions given in the schematic. I think there are errors in those measurements because for the size 37”, it was calling for a 21” sleeve and my sleeves were about 23”, and other body length measurements were off by inches. I finally found a size medium sweater in my closet and measured it. Those sleeves were 23” sewn from top of shoulder to the cuff, the body length was around 24 or 25” so I stopped worrying about my measurements on my project. After sewing together, I tried it on and while it’s a little big on me, it should fit my mom with room for her to comfortably wear a long-sleeve top or turtleneck underneath it.
Final measurements:

  • Body gauge after blocking: 17sts/22 rows per 4 inches
  • Sleeve gauge after blocking: 18sts/21 rows per 4 inches
  • Bust after blocking (and drying): 36-1/2 inches
  • Length down center of back from neck to hem after blocking: 24 inches
  • bottom hem to armpit/divide for arms: 12-1/2 inches
  • height of arm hole from pit to shoulder (straight line): 10 inches
  • arm length down top of sleeve from shoulder seam to wrist cuff: 22 inches
  • shoulder to shoulder width (at shoulder/sleeve seams): 17”
  • final weight of sweater: approx 475 grams/1 lb 0.8oz
