Unable to get pattern gauge with this yarn, but I like the combo, so I’ll be improvising. With size 8, I get 5 spi instead of 4.75. Shooting for 47” chest size.
2023-04-27: Cuff & Sleeves
Size 7, 52 stitches, 20 rounds.
Follow instructions for 51.25” chest.
Instead of M1 3 sts before end of round, M1R.
I’m happier with sleeves at about 21”.
2023-05-29: Row Gauge Snafu
Well, this is annoying, but the row gauges of my two sleeves don’t match. One is significantly shorter than the other. After blocking, both are too long, but I only need to rip six rounds of one, and sixteen of the other to get my target length.
2023-06-05: Discovery
7.5” into the body (1 whole skein of knitting), I determined that my gauge estimates are off and the sweater will be too small—only 43.5 inches. That’s almost no positive ease.
My gauge on the body is 5.45, and I’d need at least 250 stitches for the sweater to fit. Will follow the instructions 2 sizes bigger, for the 55.25” sweater to make one that’s 47”.
I’ll need to add width to my sleeves as well.
2023-07-01: Pockets
Working body before reworking sleeves, and I’m now at the point that I need to start pockets.
2023-08-07: Body
I was shooting for a little over 18” for the lower body. My row gauge is 9 rows per inch (4.5 slipped stitches). I overshot that a bit, but it should be OK.
2023-08-09: Sleeve Do-Over
Casting on a third sleeve, in hopes that the gauge will match up with one of the existing ones.
2023-09-04: Button Bands
Once sleeves were sorted, the yoke proceeded with no problems, although I had to rip and rework the last 10 rows because somehow I had too many stitches at the end. No problem with collar or sewing down pockets.
I picked up 157 stitches for right button band, so reduced to 156.
But let’s check the math: 25 rows of cuff = 17 sts.
120 slipped stitches = 120 picked up sts.
Buttonhole band pickup was 164. Work 8 sts together?
Collar is 24 rows or 16 sts.
153. I’ve picked up a few too many, but let’s call it good with cast-on, bind-off, and picked up stitch seams?
9 rows (including pickup row) then bind off with larger needle.
