Notes

nothing fancy, just letting the yarn sing :: cetacean serenade

CO 160 stitches

1 dye rpt = 110sts

on 4mm needle, gauge is~22sts/10cm.
aiming for 70 x 218 so cast on 154 sts. K 3 garter ridges, then st st, keeping 3 st garter edging both sides. that said, one-and-a-half dye rpts would be 165 sts which is close enough …
17 sep - and I finished the grafting. Hooray!!
27 aug - ripped cast off yesterday, including there garter ridges. Steamed some of the link out of the yarn today and re-knit edging from a long tail cast on (161 sts somehow), knit three garter ridges. Next step will be to graft.
10 aug - cast off, bit loose, might need to do it again. Could also have managed a couple more rows of stocking st. Might actually be nice to cast on and knit three ridges, then Kitchener it onto the shawl. Hmm??
9 aug - 7gm to go. Unbelievable. Am going to knit 4 more rows and then commence the 3 garter ridges and cast off.
8 aug - 95 per cent
5 aug - 85 per cent
29 jul - three-quarters of the way through! have done some measuring too. a knit row and purl row is about 1 gram. am not sure though whether the knit rows weigh more than the purl. the rows are quite varied in weighted. 5 grams to cast off?
13 jul - 123gm to go! That’s 15 per cent in a week :)
6 jul - halfway through!! wow, why do i set these feats of knitting endurance for myself. this has hit waaay tedious knitting, although it is fun to see the pattern unfurling.
i think i’m getting about 5 per cent done per day, so it could be as little as 10 days from completion! could be …
5 jul - have knit 151gm of 232, so about 45 per cent. measures about 90cm
29 jun - 199.5gm to go!
5 jun - 1/3 way there, length is 61cm
31 may 15 - 213gm to go
1 apr - have actually knit past where I had all of the excess yarn wound around the skein (bc the skein got way too big for my ball winder). Knitting weighs 72 grams
31 mar - 30cms, weighs ~54.1gm and i have 265.8gm to go. so seem to be 13% of the way through my length but already 16% of the way through my yarn …
29 mar - 22cms!!
28 mar - almost 20cms, almooooost!
25 mar - am just loving this fabric
24 mar - picked up sts from provisional crochet cast on, worked v nicely. have commenced with garter st border using yarn kept aside at beginning. looks like there’ll be plenty enough.
17 mar - took photos of two strips then frogged it all back. but bottom, frogged the garter st edging as well. will have to guess what is enough. have crocheted up a provisional cast on. started knitting midway through a blue stretch, across 3 white stretches and half a blue, that’s actually a bit more than 1.5 dye rpts … about 3cms done. 215 to go :)
15 mar 15 - have tried it on 110 sts, which is i think (or thought) one dye rpt. didn’t get stripes but not sure if that was due to a rogue garter ridge when i was tired last night (as opposed to tired tonight). am now getting black holes (well, dark blue) instead of white flashes. plan - frog back to first lot of garter. do a long crochet provisional cast on, maybe 180sts, and start knitting at the centre of a blue stretch. knit 154 for 70cms or 165 for 1.5 dye rpts?? anyway, continue in st st for a bit. at some point, go back and k the three garter st ribs to get that lagging yarn out of the way!
14 mar 15 - so, what’s this going to look like? i have cast on 192 and knit 3”. it’s produced these wonderful stars, three across. my favourite wool silk blend woven shawl is 70cm across. expecting a gauge of 24sts/10cm i cast on the 192 for this to make it 80cm wide. but i think i’ve got more like 22sts/10cm which would make it more like 87cm wide. this knit fabric is of course heavier than my woven shawl. how much do i want around my neck?? i like the fabric created on the 4mm needle (and don’t have a 3.75mm addi lace handy to go down to anyway!) what sort of patterning will be created if i go narrower? ideally, i would love it if i could get vertical stripes. i wish that i had measured the hank before balling it up! would that have helped??
70cm width would be 154 sts, much more manageable than 192. but what if i don’t like the patterning?? what if i can’t get this one again?? what if, what if!
