Since I was going to a semi-formal ball as the Once-ler and only have the grey outfit, I figured it’d be cute to knit a fuzzy tie. I decided to do a bow tie instead of a regular tie in honour of someone else’s Once-ler roleplay character, and though I considered just using cheap acrylic and brushing it, I decided to use the last of my nice stuff on this (though I still have a tiny bit left!).

As for the elastic band, I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough yarn, and I’ve never actually dealt with a bow tie before, so I wasn’t sure how long the neck portion should be. So, I made sure the front had a knit portion, then I used elastic for the back so it’d be comfortable. Also, it would prevent me from having to tie and untie the bow multiple times, which could felt the wool component of the yarn or otherwise screw up its appearance.

Admittedly, I do have a pin supporting one of the flappy bits.

I didn’t use an existing knitting pattern; I found a drawing for a sewing pattern, and used it as a guideline for getting the size and shape correct. I did take notes, but I should probably do a test run in a less fuzzy yarn before distributing the pattern (and it’s probably pretty close to someone else’s pattern just by sheer chance; it’s pretty basic).
