Notes
  • Went rogue for most of the colorwork on this project. Bats and all colorwork after the books were not per original pattern and were designed myself. I’ve added the charts to my project photos for others to incorporate as they want (credit is always appreciated if you use/reshare slightly_smiling_face).

Cast on size 5 with alternate cable cast on. Used lifted left increases (LLI) as m1 and replaced all other increases with LLI and RLI where applicable.

For best color dominance, on 2 color rows kept CC1 (viper) furthest to the left and/or MC furthest right. For 3 color rows, kept CC1 to the left, CC2 middle, and MC right. I use both hands for colorwork, so for three strands the ccs are in my left and the mc is carried in my right.

Wasn’t a fan of the text across my chest, so switched to bats instead (which were later added to the actual pattern as a hem option, which was cool). Added additional colorwork before the bats to mirror the colorwork above the moons. Also added an additional buffer row of the main color both before and after the bats. I reworked the chart to widen the book so there’s only at max 5 columns of MC between repeats versus the original 9. This was also added to parts of the actual pattern when it was reworked to split for sleeves higher on some of the smaller sizes.

Ripped out a couple of times on the books, the second time because I didn’t realize the yoke depth was going to be 11 inches. I usually do 8 to 9, so that extra couple was not going to be flattering in my opinion. So I ripped back to the bats, added 4 buffer rows of main color after the bats, splitting for sleeves on the third row. While I’m doing an odd size, I didn’t move the BOR marker so I could maintain the pattern repeats. I don’t mind the patterns not being centered on me. Cast on 6 underarm stitches per pattern, which added enough back in for full pattern repeats. Yoke depth is approximately 9 inches. The pattern was later updated to split the smaller sizes earlier, but not the size I did (5).

Since I moved the books to the body, I added colorwork to the rest of the body.

Cast off using tubular bind off.

Did sleeves differently too. Don’t have enough cc yarn to do full colorwork sleeves, so used main color for most of sleeve. Didn’t work any decreases for length of sleeve. Added spiderweb colorwork at bottom, then k2tog a whole round shortly before ribbing to create more of a balloon sleeve. Did 6 rounds of ribbing and used tubular bind off. Barely had enough for the second sleeve, had to use some scrap.

Blocking lengthened both the body and sleeves to the perfect length. Unfortunately the black yarn bled a bit into the white, particularly on the sleeves. Luckily it wasn’t too bad, but still a bit disappointed.

I learned that I’m entirely too much of a control freak to do MKALs, but I absolutely still loved doing this one.
