I used safety eyes on my previous kitty. Turns out, safety eyes are still not recommended for young children, and I wanted it to be a gift for a baby.
So I crocheted black circles, but that looked creepy. I cut them off, and googled crocheted eyes. I found the pattern mentioned above, but the link to the written out instructions didn’t work. Fortunately, there’s a video on YouTube. I don’t like following instructions via a video, though, so I wrote them out for myself. Keeping them here so I can find them again:
• Magic circle in black, 1 chain, 6 sc in ring.
• 2 sc in next 3 stitches, change to eye colour in last stitch (I used green)
• Crocheting over the tails, 2 sc in next 3 stitches
• 1 sc in next stitch, change colour to black
• Loosely slip stitch in next 5 stitches
• Join white with a slip stitch on next stitch
• Loosely slip stitch in next 6 stitches
• Pull the last white stitch through and put through needle
• Weave your needle under the first black sc, front to back
• Put your needle through the center of the last white stitch, front to back
• Create eye highlight from the back: put needle from back to front, then front to back over a stitch in the location you want. Repeat.

It was time to fill the kitty, and I have stuff for it, called restyle, which is 100% polyester, siliconized hollow fibers. I found someone online using the same material of a different brand, claiming it is safe for children, but on my bag, it says ‘keep away from children below the age of 4’. Which I find very strange, because there is a picture of a stuffed panda on it, and an obvious use of this material is stuffing toys.
I didn’t want to take the chance, so now I stuffed the toy with leftover wool.
