I have an outdoor hiking backpack, you know, the type with a hip strap, side pockets and a mesh back. The thing is, it doesn’t have a suitable pocket for my phone. I would have liked something on the shoulder straps, but it isn’t there. There are pockets on the hip straps, but they are too small to fit the phone when they curve around your hips. And all the other pockets can only be reached when you take the backpack of your back. And I want to be able to reach it while walking, either to take a picture, or to consult my GPS app.

So, I decided to make a pocket and attach it to one of the hip straps.

I started with a row of chains, making sure the length matched the width of my phone. Then I made a row of sc’s in the back loop of the chains. Because I did it in the back loop, the chains also look like sc’s from the bottom, so it seems a bit like 2 rows of sc’s. I did 2 sc’s on the side, and continued crocheting in the double loops of the chains at the bottom. I did 2 sc’s on the other side, and continued crocheting on the first row of sc’s. Continuing in rounds until my pocket had a length of ~2/3 of the phone.
In the next to last row, I did a double sc on each corner of the phone, so 4 extra stitches to make it a little easier to slide the phone in.
Just having rounded one of the corners, I now did sc’s in the back loop only, until I reached the next corner. Then I turned around, going back and forth to make the strap to attach the pocket to the backpack’s hip strap. When it has a length of double the width of the hip strap, I will wrap it around the hip strap, and find the leftover loops of the back loop sc’s, making either slip stitches or sc’s to these loops.
