Notes

My friend was complaining about how difficult it is to find a non- white doll, so I’m going to make her one. Or two, since this is a double doll. I won’t be using safety eyes, because they are not for young children. And I don’t want a sleeping doll, so both will have open eyes.

Colours:
Doll 1

  • Skin - coffee
  • Hair - Camel
  • Dress - Curry

Doll 2

  • Skin - Hazelnut
  • Hair - Dark brown
  • Dress - Light green & Navy

The colour change works quite well. The slip stitches need to be loose because it it’s almost impossible to do the sc2tog otherwise. Unfortunately, the second time I did it extra loose, the stitches don’t look so nice, and I still had trouble. What seems to help is to pick up the second front loop with another hook, pull that almost through, and then push it through with your original hook.

I’m not sure the instructions for the 4dc bobble are correct. In the end, I made 4 unfinished dc’s in one stitch, doing everything except pulling the last loop through, then pulling a loop through all 5 loops on the hook.

I made an eye with the same yarn and hook as the doll (2 mm hook), and it’s 17 mm in diameter. It seems to be too big to me. The pattern uses 12 mm safety eyes, for a doll made with worsted and a 3 mm hook, so I should make smaller eyes, I think.

Made another eye, also hook 2, but thinner yarn (Rico essentials crochet, 50g=280m). The eye is 13 mm.
And another one, hook 1, durable crocheting yarn, which is 8 mm.

Sigh. From looking at the pictures, when the pattern says to put the eyes 8 stitches apart, it means put them more than 8 stitches apart, so that the eyes’ edges facing each other are 8 stitches apart.

Hmm, I finished the doll part, and the hazelnut (the lighter brown) has a smaller head then the coffee side. I counted the number of stitches, and they are really the same.
The total height is 18 cm.

Using hook 2.5 for the green dress.

Finally finished the first skirt. I don’t quite understand why the skirt is not crocheted on instead of sewn. If I ever made this again, I would try that. As it is, I didn’t like the opening in the ruffles in the back. So I undid the fastening off, and crocheted slip stitches, ending in the first stitch and then fastening off. I think it looks better.

I finished the dresses! I decided to sew the 2 dresses together at the hem, something that is not mentioned in the pattern, but that will prevent my green dress from showing underneath the yellow.
I moved up in hook size to 4 to make everything fit.
